Lower School
Academics - Lower School
Because classical education aims to cultivate the whole person, we start the process on a child's first day at school. As every parent of a toddler knows, the process of shaping a child's loves and forming good character can--and must--begin early. Our Junior Kindergarten through 12th grade curriculum is conceived and designed as a whole,with goals and a trajectory that begin on day one.
From the youngest years, we equip our students with excellent stories, songs, vocabulary, mathematical concepts, objects of wonder, and passages of Scripture to fill their imaginations and lead them to know, love, and serve our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Bible
The Bible is studied daily to give students not only a knowledge of its content, but also to learn about God’s creative and redemptive work in Jesus Christ.
Lower grammar school students study the Bible from Genesis through the Gospels, memorize scripture passages and catechism questions, and sing psalms and hymns to the Lord.
English Language
English language studies are focused on grammar, the skill of reading and interpreting words. Beginning with basic phonics and oral narration, students progressively build their reading, writing, and vocabulary skills alongside a wide variety of great literature.
History
Students study history from creation through the present day, covering the periods of ancient Mesopotamian and Hebrew cultures, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations, the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Reformation, and the American experience. For each period, students learn a chronology of important events, dates and people, and understand their significance. Related geography, literature, music and art are integrated in the study of each historical time period.
Latin
Latin is the foundational language of Western Civilization, the source of the five Romance languages, and the root of over fifty percent of English words.
Students begin studying Latin in third grade, moving from simple to more complex proficiency and understanding in the upper school years.
